Doncaster September 1962 > LPIS STM BW NEGS 0128

On a sunny September 8th 1962, a series of photographs were taken at Doncaster station. The trains were severely disrupted by an accident the previous evening at Offord involving A1 60123 ‘H.A. Ivatt’.

Gresley A4 60010 'Dominion of Canada' acclerates away from Doncaster with 14.10 1E12 Leeds to King’s Cross train sometime in the afternoon/evening. The engine had worked to Leeds with the 1N02 04:00 King’s Cross to Leeds train earlier in the day, but given the chaos surrounding the diversions, it’s return to London seems to have been delayed. This service was due to be worked by a Finsbury Park Deltic, but given the chaos of the previous 24 hours, the A4 substituted.

The A4 still survives today, having been donated by British Rail in 1966 to the Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA). The locomotive returned home during 2013 as part of the Mallard Festival to mark the 75th Anniversary of the record-breaking run of 4468 "Mallard" on 3rd July 1938.
