Doncaster September 1962 > LPIS STM BW NEGS 0119

On a sunny September 8th 1962, a series of photographs were taken at Doncaster station. The trains were severely disrupted by an accident the previous evening at Offord involving A1 60123 ‘H.A. Ivatt’.

Awaiting departure from Doncaster Station Platform 1 on 8th September 1962 is Doncaster B1 61003 'Gazelle', with Class 31 D5835 (later 31302) as pilot, with presumably a train to East Anglia via the Joint Line. The Type 2 had been delivered to Sheffield Darnall shed on 26th April 1962, but is recorded as being a Stratford locomotive from 15th September, a week after this photograph was taken.

Two alternative theories as to the working are that the photo was taken at around 11am in the morning and the train is either a Newcastle to Lowestoft or Doncaster to Yarmouth working. The second theory is that it is around 3:30pm and this is the Newcastle to Colchester train. Please contact us if you know better!

B1 61003, was withdrawn from Colwick shed on Boxing Day 1965, and cut up some time on February 1966. The Class 31 was withdrawn as 31302 from nearby Tinsley shed in March 1989.
