The Bay City Rollers had much to answer for going by the sight of these two railfans comparing notes at the east end of Lime Street Liverpool station during a railtour loco exchange between two Class 40s.. An excellent day with fascinating itinerary had started from Euston to Crewe where the the first Class 40 number 40185 took over for freight lines and junctions throughout northern Lancashire and the North West. A fast run from Manchester led to a reversal and the second Class 40, number 40170, leading over CLC lines back to Crewe. The participants had been lucky enough to be headed by the doyen of the then rare Class 84, number 84001, between London and Crewe and return.
