The Bay City Rollers had much to answer for going by the sight of these two railfans comparing notes at the east end of Lime Street Liverpool station during a railtour loco exchange between two Class 40s.. An excellent day with fascinating itinerary had started from Euston to Crewe where the the first Class 40 number 40185 took over for freight lines and junctions throughout northern Lancashire and the North West. A fast run from Manchester led to a reversal and the second Class 40, number 40170, leading over CLC lines back to Crewe. The participants had been lucky enough to be headed by the doyen of the then rare Class 84, number 84001, between London and Crewe and return.

Liverpool Lime Street, with an up Inter City arriving behind a Class 86 in the far left background, but of far more interest to the assembled passengers of a the Diesel and Electric Group railtour of little-used lines and spurs of the north-west, is the arrival of English Electric Type 4 Class 40 number 40170. It took over from 40185 and headed the train towards south Manchester for an afternoon’s running mostly over ex-CLC lines.

Two AL6 Class 86 electric locos, headed by number E3174 (with E3182 behind), lay-over between the platforms at Liverpool Lime Street station waiting for the next legs in their diagrams in the early 1970s. Still largely in their original conditions with cast numbers and British Rail logos the class maintained all the top-link express services on the LNW routes out of London until the arrival of the Class 87s for the Scottish electrification. E3174 at the front is ready to move forward as soon as its empty-stock arrives to take train 1A52 south as the 14 30 Liverpool Lime Street to London Euston.

As happened at most large urban terminal stations, there was always a quiet interlude after lunchtime for a couple of hours and Liverpool Lime Street was no different. This time it’s a summer’s afternoon in 1973 and an immaculate outshopped AM4 Class 304 25kv LMR Western Lines EMU stands silently before its next working south. At the adjacent platform face is a two-car DMU probably for stations to Manchester Oxford Road or Warrington.

Not often photographed, West Kirby is situated on the top left side of the Wirral peninsula and is the western terminus of the Liverpool and Birkenhead suburban rail system, much of which is in tunnel. The system was an early candidate for electrification and in 1938 the LMS commissioned a brand new and innovative fleet of three car multiple units, the first to have air-operated sliding doors which eventually became Class 503s. This late morning shot clearly depicts one of the problems the system suffered; that of a paucity of stabling points. In similar fashion to the Southern Region’s London area sidings throughout the system were used to park up trains only required during the morning and evening rushes.

Turning the camera around from the previous view means we are looking towards the first stop on the line towards Birkenhead and Liverpool. The first station is Hoylake, an affluent residential area with international standard golf course. The Merseyrail system, as in so many large urban areas, was almost Jekyll and Hyde in character, passing through almost extremes of economic well-being or, sadly, the opposite.

An end of platform view at Southport, on a particularly unpleasant day in the 1970s. As can be seen, two routes split away from each other immediately beyond the end of the platforms and the Class 503 emus stabled in the centre are adjacent to the Wirral and Southport coast lines of the Liverpool electric Mersey suburban system. To the right then is the line to Liverpool, next stop Birkdale for the famous Royal Birkdale Golf Course and to the left the line leads sharply round to Meols Cop, Burscough and Wigan.
