BR TYPE 5 CLASS 85

The Class 85 Electric Locomotives were built during the early 1960s, as part of a policy to develop a standard electric locomotive. A total of 40 were built between the years 1961 to 1964 at Doncaster Works. They were used on the newly electrified West Coast Main Line. From 1971 onwards, locomotives were renumbered to the 85001-040 series. A total of 15 of the class were converted for use on freight and were restricted to 80 mph. Only one locomotive has been preserved number 85101.
