SULZER TYPE 4 CLASS 44 – 46 PEAKS

The Class 44, 45 & 46 Diesel Locomotives, also known as the Sulzer Type 4, were built by British Railways as a 1Co-Co1 configuration at their Derby and Crewe Works between 1960 and 1962.

Along with the similar Class 44 and 46 locomotives, they became known as "Peaks". They worked initially on the Midland Main Line in 1962 and became the principal locomotive to offer improved acceleration over steam engines. The class were later also employed on the cross country routes from the North East to the South West of Britain. With the introduction of the HST in 1982 they were subsequently used on secondary routes until withdrawal in the late 1980’s. A few of the class survive in preservation.
