 A golden era of British railway operating or outdated working practices wherever you look? Whichever is the answer there’s no denying that this scene shot at the north end of Leicester station in high summer 1973 contains, from left to right, a thriving business utilising many four-wheeled box vans, bracket signals aplenty, a superb example of a manual signalbox and wagonload freight in goods terminal sidings exemplified by the single tank-wagon. However, we must not ignore the immaculate Peak Class 45 heading 1M13 the 08 10 Sheffield to St Pancras Inter City into the station before making a dash for London 99 miles away.

 Under the watchful eye of an enthusiast a cross-country, in the strictest sense of the term, six-car DMU made up of two three-car Swindon-built Class 120 units approaches Leicester station, one of the more important stops on the long, regular, journey across middle England from Lincoln to Birmingham in 1973. This journey involved a trip via Newark Castle, Nottingham and Trent Junction before Leicester. Onwards the trip continued via Nuneaton before the run into Birmingham. On the left, traditionally acting as yard pilot, as they were designed to do, a BR 350hp Class 08 shunter that was a Leicester asset all its life, number 3786 (later 08619), trundles a box-van towards others as it makes up a fitted van train for onward transit.

 In July 1973 (possibly 22nd July), two smart and clean looking Sulzer Type 2 Class 25s strike out from Leicester northwards with train 1E91, the 07.58 Walsall to Great Yarmouth, a popular holiday destination at the time. Compare this to today’s totally inadequate summer service of Class 158s and 170s. NOTE. There is no comparative train these days, Birmingham to Ely, change to Norwich, change to Great Yarmouth!! This train would be routed via Melton Mowbray which, even at this point in the early ‘70s, was a rationalised route compared to the original meander for these trains from Birmingham New Street up the WCML to Rugby then across country on the closed in the late 1960s line direct to Peterborough via Oundle.
