BRCW TYPE 5 CLASS 81

The Class 81 AC Electric Locomotive was the first type of AC electric locomotive to be delivered to British Railways and operated on the West Coast Main Line. A total of 100 locomotives of five types were acquired, each type from a different manufacturer. The first engine, number E3001, was presented to British Railways in 1959. They were numbered E3001 to E3023 and E3096 / E3097.
