British Diesel & Electrics > Class 76 Locomotives
The Class 76 Electrics were introduced onto the Trans-Pennine Woodhead route in the early 1950s, the majority remaining in service until 1981 when the line between Manchester and Sheffield was closed by BR. They were unusual in that they operated at 1500V DC, rather than the 25kV AC designs used elsewhere on BR. Only one locomotive remains in preservation, which is 76020 (26020), and it is based at the National railway Museum in York.
